The penultimate London League has been and gone and from the results available it seems as though SLH Tri Club should be 2nd Overall in the League and 2nd overall in the Mob Match Competition. This is far better then the Club expected when we first decided to target the League. The race took place in Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre but abandoned the usual swim, bike and run format in favour of a swim, run then bike running order instead. The swim took place in a large lake; Rob Crozier was feeling the temperature after misplacing his wetsuit and swimming without one. Colin Young picked up a nasty cut to his foot when exiting the swim but managed to struggle on through the run and bike to finish in a very respectable time. Fastest SLH Swimmer of the day was Brian Hennesey who went on to finish as third Vet. Ruth Hutton followed only one second behind and Ben Corteen was just another two seconds slower then her. After the swim things dried out quickly for the run and Andy Collins put in the quickest run time for SLH catching all of our athletes with the exception of Brian. The run was 75% on road with only minor undulations before going across a flat field and back into transition number two and the bike. This race is part of a ten toughest triathlon series but though the bike route was a little lumpy it wasn’t as bad as a lot of people had expected, there’s even a rumour that after an hour or so of complaining on the way to the race at least two of the SLH team actually quite enjoyed themselves. After the bike the pecking order finished as above. Well done to all who took part, particularly Ruth for first lady, Andy for first VET, Brian for third VET and Martin for his first time as a scorer in the London League. Rob

Where to begin…

So what if the forecast was a bit rotten, fifteen SLH TRI CLUB didn’t seem to care as they took on the worst of the weather and the best of the competition. Rumour has it from the provisional results that SLH Tri were third overall, This could mean anything for the London League, it really depends on what Optima and Ful-on-Tri did on the day. At best we’ll bob up to second and at worst we’ll tread water in third position. It’s true that the other clubs seem to be playing a tactical game but for every point they concede by not turning up we gain a place by being consistently strong. I’m sure the same can be applied to sensible training and I’m very proud to be involved with a consistently strong club like ours.

As for individual performances; Matt Chapman showed his strength in his first open event fro SLH Tri by being our second fastest athlete of the day on his second event in our Colours. Well done to Beckie, It’ll be interesting to see how you did overall. Trudy had a good day and I was very impressed as I watched her glide past two others in her lane during the swim leg. I’m sure Nigel will be pleased to know that his swim coaching is being put to good use. Ruth never fails to impress and today was no exception, she took age group honours having only seen water at bath times for the last four months having chosen to dedicate her time to marathon training. Andy Evans kept injuries at bay to come in as our fifth scorer and though he kept me out of the honours I can honestly say that I’m very pleased for him. Particularly after he vowed to wear club kit once we have replenished our stocks. Andy Collins, having received a silver medal at the National Age Group Duathlon Champs this year he was always going to be one of our big guns and it is a pleasure to see him take Age group honours in an Aquathlon event.

A big well done to all of the athletes that I haven’t mentioned individually though, having spoken to you after the event I know that people were pleased with there performances and I think if we’re being honest we were a little shocked with our own presence today.

There are only three events left in the league now and one of those (Palace) is full. Get your entries in soon for Hillingdon Tri and the Clash of the Tritons. If I put my tactical head on for a minute I’m not sure how well Thames, FOT, Serpentine and Optima will travel so we may well be able to claw back some points for a spectacular sprint finish at the last event.

Lastly, having had only one lady at each of the first two events it was great to have four today so well done to Lorraine, Trudy, Beckie and Ruth.

National Duathlon Champs  (Ashbourne)

Andy Collins was our sole competitor at this National event, unable to get away Friday night, it meant another early start, leaving home at 4:30am. The race comprises a tough 12Km run, hilly 40km bike, then a fast flat 4km run. A little disappointed with his 3rd placing at Cambridge , Andy was keen to turn the tables on the two that beat him there. I am pleased to be able to report he did that and, surpassing his own expectations he won the silver medal, coming second in his age group.

The race set off in 4 waves with Phil and Parky in the second and Andy chasing them down from the fourth wave.

Conditions were good and the race always attracts a quality field.

Finishing positions were:

Thames Turbo results

1st April 2007

Sunday 1st April was the first of the London League fixtures, proceedings took place at Stubbers Activity centre near Upminster and the event, The Dragonslayer was hosted by East London Triathletes.

Members present on the day were; Kathleen S, Andy C, Jim B, Anthony H, Francis S, Phil S and Rob C.

The first 3 mile run was all off road and pretty flat with the exception of a few short hills and a stiff breeze added in for good measure. A nice flat non technical bike route and again the breeze was present, four laps and around 23 miles according to Francis. To finish it off we had to put the running shoes back on and head out for the last 5 mile off road run.

We were first team with Full on Tri in 2nd and Optima in 3rd. I think we caused a bit of a stir among the other teams who I'm guessing have never heard of us.

Our scorers Jim Burdett 2nd Overall Andy Collins 4th overall, 1st Vet Phil Scarles 16th? Francis Staunton 19th? Kathleen Southall 36th?

Did my first multisport event since the two bods race on Sunday. Went over to Dorney lake, had a reasonable day by coming 25th out of 110 or so.  The weather was a bit miserable with strong winds and a little bit of hail at the end of the second run. The distances were 5k -20k - 5k, I'm back in action at Beaulieu this Sunday and I think I might have some SLH Tri Company there.

10th March 2007

On Saturday 10th March, Andy Collins and Phil Scarles travelled to Worksop in Nottinghamshire to race the Clumber Park Duathlon which was a qualifying event for selection for the GB Age group Teams for the European and World Duathlon Championships later this year. The first 5 in each category would automatically qualify for the GB Team.  Andy was up against 59 others and Phil 32 in their respective age groups.

Arriving a little late, and with no time for any warming up, both were tight from sitting in the car for 3 hours.  The first 10k run was run at a phenomenal pace with the first man back in 33’ 05”.   Phil ran 36’ 12”, whilst Andy was lagging behind coming in nearly a minute later in 37’ 10”.  So to the bike legOn an undulating 40K course Andy put in a good solid 62 mins while Phil struggled a little and completed the bike leg in 72 mins.  After a smooth T2 Andy was flying and took 19’ 15” for the second run of 5K, with Phil running in 20 mins.

The overall times were Andy 2hrs 1min ( 20th overall) and 2hrs 11mins for Phil (95th overall).

Andy was very surprised to find out that he had not only qualified but was the 1st Vet 40 to finish so collected his age group trophy.  The results show that he won his category by only 28 seconds, however 27 of these were made up by quicker transitions.  A lesson for all of us.

Phil finished 9th in his category so must wait to see if this is good enough for qualification.

Both Andy and Phil are racing again at the Cambridge Duathlon in April which is another qualifier, so fingers crossed for Phil.

The SLH Tri Club flag was flying at the Chilly Duathlon. Andy Collins went to Castle Coombe race track for an early season duathlon. The conditions were absolutely treacherous with horizontal rain throughout the event. Andy was pleased with his performance, finishing 7th overall and 1st male vet 40. This bodes well for Andy at the GB qualifying event at Clumber Park next Saturday.
