Many thanks to
Lorraine and the rest of her team for laying on an excellent
aquathlon. Despite some people still felling the effects of the barn
dance from the night before there was a great turnout some superb
results. Attached is a copy of the results - hopefully we will see
you all at the Tri Club annual dinner for the prize giving. Matt

Chris Costiff
competed in the full Ironman distance race in the New Forest
billed as the Forestman. The event started at 5.30am on
Sunday morning with a nice sunrise. Chris was 4th woman out
of the water in a time of 1.36 actual swim time and wondered why
the time was slow we later found out the swim course was 400m
long. Chris had a really good bike leg and got of the bike
in 2nd place. This is where the race began with 3 girls all
in contention. Chris managed to get the lead at 21 miles and
stay there while the girl in 3rd managed to take 2nd place.

Matt's race
report from Hillingdon:
With excellent
weather there were plenty of SLH triathletes out yesterday to take
advantage of the great conditions at the Hillingdon
Triathlon.
Despite the silly o’clock
start, everyone was raring to go as we met in the race HQ at 7am
where we were reminded that the race does not take the usual
triathlon format as the swim is followed by the run and then onto
the bikes.
Ruth was the first
SLH out of the water but as she wrestled with her wetsuit I
managed to get out on the run just before her. Next out of
the water was David, Brian and Beckie who all had a great swim
finishing in around 11minutes 30. The run course doubled
back on its self so everyone was able to see how they were doing
in relation to the leading group.
Ruth had a fantastic
race, and despite being in fourth place after the run she had a
storming ride to be the first lady home.
The donuts and cold
cans of coke dished out at the finish were definitely well
received, and certainly well deserved. It was a great race
that I will defiantly be doing again. Well done to all those
that took part and many thanks for the much appreciated support
from Brian’s wife.
A
great club turnout and excellent results at Hillingdon

Dear All
Our Tri club has just
had one of it's busiest weekends of the Tri season.
The first of two Aquathlons took
place on Friday and was a great success. Followed by
our fantastic training
day on Sunday.
A huge thanks goes out to Nigel and Chris for pulling it all together and another
thank you to Matt
and Becky for their enthusiastic
input and culinary skills but also their
delicious homemade apple cake, which went down a treat.
Also thanks
to all those who
came along and helped us make the day an
enjoyable one for all. I hope you managed to pick up some tips and
not pick up too much sun burn!
On the weather front
it was spot on, lots of sunshine and a slight breeze, so
the swim at the end of the day was very welcoming.
As you were all aware we were joined by John Horseman a Triathlon
London level 3 BTF coach. His input t was very much appreciated
and his feed back about our club was also very encouraging.
I would just like to add that Chris Costiff joined us later after
completing a 100 mile TT, where she was 1st lady!
Then drove 80 miles to join us, to take part in the swim
session and of course a
glass or two of wine. A very tough act to follow lads!
See you all soon and lets push the boat out for Hillingdon !!BRING
IT ON !!
Regards

17th June 2008
Hi all,
There is loads going on this week so I thought I would just send out
a quick reminder of what’s on the cards.
Thursday
Another gruelling brick session headed up by Nigel. Usual time, 6.45
at the club house or 7.00 up on Farthing Downs.
Friday
This Friday will see the first of the two SLH Aquathlons, the second
of which will be on Saturday 13th September.
For the seniors the race will consist of a 400m swim followed by a
4km run while the juniors will do a 200m swim followed by a 2km run.
There is a new and exciting run course which consists of a 1km loop
as shown on the map, any feedback will be greatly received.
You will be able to register for the event from 7.00 in the car park
at the far end of the swimming pool (this will also be the
transition area). Everybody should be registered and changed ready
for the race briefing at 7.30 so that we can start promptly at 7.45.
The event will cost £3.50 for seniors and £1.50 for the
juniors.
Sunday
There are still places available for the Southwater training day so
if you fancy coming along let us know ASAP so that we can ensure
there be enough food on the bbq.
Hope to see you there, Matt

Hi all,
Lorraine and Ed
raced in the Eaton Super Sprints on Saturday kicking off a great
weekends racing for the tri club. Unfortunately they didn’t get Ed’s
split times but he finished in 165th in a time of 1.09 and Lorraine
finished 7th in her age category in 1.25.
Fortunately the weather was much
improved come Sunday morning in time for the start of the East
Grinstead triathlon. The race was this years club sprint champs and
consequently there was a huge SLH turn out with 13 members of the
club competing.
The ladies were well represented
with Ruth and Chris both coming first in their age groups. Jane had
a great race and finished in 3rd place and, despite Jim not being
around to put her chain back on when it came off (!), Jennie
finished 10th.
The men were also out in force.
Nigel lead the way finishing 2nd in his age group, Dave, on his
brand new bike successfully completed his first triathlon, he had a
strong finish with the sixth fastest run. Also out for their first
triathlon was Paul, he came out of the water in 264th place and then
with excellent bike and run sections he worked his way up the
rankings to finish 22nd!
Wednesday and Thursday night
training
Due to the EGM this
Wednesday there won’t be any open water swimming at Southwater.
However, there run will be a ‘brick’ session on Thursday night,
meet at the club house at 6.45 and we will then head up onto
Farthing Downs for a half hour session.
See you there, Matt
EAST GRINSTEAD TRIATHLON 2008
Well done to all who took part
today especially Matt Chapman who was first home for SLHTri and Ruth
Hutton who was first in the v40-49 category.
The full results are now on www.egtri.com
website and make interesting reading - I know what I'm going to be
doing for the next few months!! Thanks to all who supported today
and hope Jim and Andy are back competing soon.

23rd September 2007 Chris

Sunday. This is a really well organised event and the weather was
almost perfect apart from a bit windy on the bike course which also
turned out to be 58 miles. Chris won her age group in a time of
5.49.11 and was 7th overall. Nigel did 6.30.17 after having a bit of
trouble from dismounting his bike to actually getting running on the

I would like to bring to your

The penultimate London League has
been and gone and from the results available it seems as though SLH
Tri Club should be 2nd Overall in the League and 2nd overall in the
Mob Match Competition. This is far better then the Club expected
when we first decided to target the League. The race took place in
Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre but abandoned the usual swim,
bike and run format in favour of a swim, run then bike running order
instead. The swim took place in a large lake; Rob Crozier was
feeling the temperature after misplacing his wetsuit and swimming
without one. Colin Young picked up a nasty cut to his foot when
exiting the swim but managed to struggle on through the run and bike
to finish in a very respectable time. Fastest SLH Swimmer of the day
was Brian Hennesey who went on to finish as third Vet. Ruth Hutton
followed only one second behind and Ben Corteen was just another two
seconds slower then her. After the swim things dried out quickly for
the run and Andy Collins put in the quickest run time for SLH
catching all of our athletes with the exception of Brian. The run
was 75% on road with only minor undulations before going across a
flat field and back into transition number two and the bike. This
race is part of a ten toughest triathlon series but though the bike
route was a little lumpy it wasn’t as bad as a lot of people had
expected, there’s even a rumour that after an hour or so of
complaining on the way to the race at least two of the SLH team
actually quite enjoyed themselves. After the bike the pecking order
finished as above. Well done to all who took part, particularly Ruth
for first lady, Andy for first VET, Brian for third VET and Martin for
his first time as a scorer in the London League. Rob

Where to begin…
So what if the forecast was a bit
rotten, fifteen SLH TRI CLUB didn’t seem to care as they took on
the worst of the weather and the best of the competition. Rumour has
it from the provisional results that SLH Tri were third overall,
This could mean anything for the London League, it really depends on
what Optima and Ful-on-Tri did on the day. At best we’ll bob up to
second and at worst we’ll tread water in third position. It’s
true that the other clubs seem to be playing a tactical game but for
every point they concede by not turning up we gain a place by being
consistently strong. I’m sure the same can be applied to sensible
training and I’m very proud to be involved with a consistently
strong club like ours.
As for individual performances;
Matt Chapman showed his strength in his first open event fro SLH Tri
by being our second fastest athlete of the day on his second event
in our Colours. Well done to Beckie, It’ll be interesting to see
how you did overall. Trudy had a good day and I was very impressed
as I watched her glide past two others in her lane during the swim
leg. I’m sure Nigel will be pleased to know that his swim coaching
is being put to good use. Ruth never fails to impress and today was
no exception, she took age group honours having only seen water at
bath times for the last four months having chosen to dedicate her
time to marathon training. Andy Evans kept injuries at bay to come
in as our fifth scorer and though he kept me out of the honours I
can honestly say that I’m very pleased for him. Particularly after
he vowed to wear club kit once we have replenished our stocks. Andy
Collins, having received a silver medal at the National Age Group
Duathlon Champs this year he was always going to be one of our big
guns and it is a pleasure to see him take Age group honours in an
Aquathlon event.
A big well done to all of the
athletes that I haven’t mentioned individually though, having
spoken to you after the event I know that people were pleased with
there performances and I think if we’re being honest we were a
little shocked with our own presence today.
There are only three events left in
the league now and one of those (Palace) is full. Get your entries
in soon for Hillingdon Tri and the Clash of the Tritons. If I put my
tactical head on for a minute I’m not sure how well Thames, FOT,
Serpentine and Optima will travel so we may well be able to claw
back some points for a spectacular sprint finish at the last event.
Lastly, having had only one lady at
each of the first two events it was great to have four today so well
done to Lorraine, Trudy, Beckie and Ruth.

National
Duathlon Champs (Ashbourne)
Andy
Collins was our sole competitor at this National event, unable to
get away Friday night, it meant another early start, leaving home at
4:30am.
The race comprises a tough
12Km run, hilly 40km bike, then a fast flat 4km run.
A little disappointed with his
3rd placing at
Cambridge
,
Andy
was keen to turn the tables on the two that beat him there.
I am pleased to be able to
report he did that and, surpassing his own expectations he won the
silver medal, coming second in his age group.

Turbo results
1st April 2007
Sunday 1st April was the first of
the London League fixtures, proceedings took place at Stubbers
Activity centre near Upminster and the event, The Dragonslayer was
hosted by East London Triathletes.
Members present on the day were;
Kathleen S, Andy C, Jim B, Anthony H, Francis S, Phil S and Rob
C.
The first 3 mile run was all off
road and pretty flat with the exception of a few short hills and a
stiff breeze added in for good measure. A nice flat non technical
bike route and again the breeze was present, four laps and around 23
miles according to Francis. To finish it off we had to put the
running shoes back on and head out for the last 5 mile off road
run.
We were first team with Full on Tri
in 2nd and Optima in 3rd. I think we caused a bit of a stir among
the other teams who I'm guessing have never heard of us.

Andy Collins 4th overall, 1st Vet Phil Scarles 16th? Francis

Robs report from the Dorney
Duathlon:
Did my first multisport event since
the two bods race on Sunday. Went over to Dorney lake, had a
reasonable day by coming 25th out of 110 or so. The
weather was a bit miserable with strong winds and a little bit of
hail at the end of the second run. The distances were 5k -20k - 5k,
I'm back in action at Beaulieu this Sunday and I think I might have
some SLH Tri Company there.

10th March 2007
On Saturday 10th March,
Andy Collins and
Phil Scarles
travelled to Worksop in Nottinghamshire to race the Clumber Park
Duathlon which was a qualifying event for selection for the GB Age
group Teams for the European and World Duathlon Championships later
this year. The first 5 in each category would automatically qualify
for the GB Team. Andy was up against 59 others
and Phil 32 in their respective age groups.
Arriving a little late, and with no
time for any warming up, both were tight from sitting in the car for
3 hours. The first 10k run was run at a phenomenal pace with
the first man back in 33’ 05”. Phil ran 36’ 12”,
whilst Andy was lagging behind coming in nearly a minute later in
37’ 10”. So to the bike leg.
On an undulating 40K course Andy put in a good solid
62 mins while Phil struggled a little and completed the bike leg in
72 mins. After a smooth T2 Andy was flying and took 19’
15” for the second run of 5K, with Phil running in 20 mins.
The overall times were Andy 2hrs
1min ( 20th overall) and 2hrs 11mins for Phil (95th
overall).
Andy was very surprised to find out
that he had not only qualified but was the 1st Vet 40 to
finish so collected his age group trophy. The results show
that he won his category by only 28 seconds, however 27 of these
were made up by quicker transitions. A lesson for all of us.
Phil finished 9th in his
category so must wait to see if this is good enough for
qualification.
Both Andy and Phil are racing again
at the Cambridge Duathlon in April which is another qualifier, so
fingers crossed for Phil.

The SLH Tri Club flag
was flying at the Chilly Duathlon. Andy Collins went to Castle
Coombe race track for an early season duathlon. The conditions were
absolutely treacherous with horizontal rain throughout the event.
Andy was pleased with his performance, finishing 7th overall and 1st
male vet 40. This bodes well for Andy at the GB qualifying event at
Clumber Park next Saturday.

I
would just like to thank everybody who took part in the event and helped
make it a success. Special thanks too Dave and Jo Grant, Cynthia
Hennessey for officiating so that the event ran smoothly.
From
the feedback I have this will definitely be an annual held on the same
weekend so put it in your diaries now.
I
would like to bring to your attention the gutsy performance by Trudy Khan
who had never swam in a (pond) before and finished without the aid of a wet
suit.

The penultimate London
League has been and gone and from the results available it seems as though
SLH Tri Club should be 2nd Overall in the League and 2nd overall in the Mob
Match Competition. This is far better then the Club expected when we first
decided to target the League. The race took place in Hillingdon Outdoor
Activity Centre but abandoned the usual swim, bike and run format in favour
of a swim, run then bike running order instead. The swim took place in a
large lake; Rob Crozier was feeling the temperature after misplacing his
wetsuit and swimming without one. Colin Young picked up a nasty cut to his
foot when exiting the swim but managed to struggle on through the run and
bike to finish in a very respectable time. Fastest SLH Swimmer of the day
was Brian Hennesey who went on to finish as third Vet. Ruth Hutton followed
only one second behind and Ben Corteen was just another two seconds slower
then her. After the swim things dried out quickly for the run and Andy
Collins put in the quickest run time for SLH catching all of our athletes
with the exception of Brian. The run was 75% on road with only minor
undulations before going across a flat field and back into transition
number two and the bike. This race is part of a ten toughest triathlon
series but though the bike route was a little lumpy it wasn’t as bad as a
lot of people had expected, there’s even a rumour that after an hour or so
of complaining on the way to the race at least two of the SLH team actually
quite enjoyed themselves. After the bike the pecking order finished as
above. Well done to all who took part, particularly Ruth for first lady,
Andy for first VET, Brian for third VET and Martin for his first time as a
scorer in the London League. Rob

Where to begin…
So what if the
forecast was a bit rotten, fifteen SLH TRI CLUB didn’t seem to care as they
took on the worst of the weather and the best of the competition. Rumour
has it from the provisional results that SLH Tri were third overall, This could
mean anything for the London League, it really depends on what Optima and
Ful-on-Tri did on the day. At best we’ll bob up to second and at worst
we’ll tread water in third position. It’s true that the other clubs seem to
be playing a tactical game but for every point they concede by not turning
up we gain a place by being consistently strong. I’m sure the same can be
applied to sensible training and I’m very proud to be involved with a
consistently strong club like ours.
As for individual
performances; Matt Chapman showed his strength in his first open event fro
SLH Tri by being our second fastest athlete of the day on his second event
in our Colours. Well done to Beckie, It’ll be interesting to see how you
did overall. Trudy had a good day and I was very impressed as I watched her
glide past two others in her lane during the swim leg. I’m sure Nigel will
be pleased to know that his swim coaching is being put to good use. Ruth
never fails to impress and today was no exception, she took age group
honours having only seen water at bath times for the last four months
having chosen to dedicate her time to marathon training. Andy Evans kept
injuries at bay to come in as our fifth scorer and though he kept me out of
the honours I can honestly say that I’m very pleased for him. Particularly
after he vowed to wear club kit once we have replenished our stocks. Andy
Collins, having received a silver medal at the National Age Group Duathlon
Champs this year he was always going to be one of our big guns and it is a pleasure
to see him take Age group honours in an Aquathlon event.
A big well done to all
of the athletes that I haven’t mentioned individually though, having spoken
to you after the event I know that people were pleased with there
performances and I think if we’re being honest we were a little shocked
with our own presence today.
There are only three
events left in the league now and one of those (Palace) is full. Get your
entries in soon for Hillingdon Tri and the Clash of the Tritons. If I put
my tactical head on for a minute I’m not sure how well Thames, FOT,
Serpentine and Optima will travel so we may well be able to claw back some
points for a spectacular sprint finish at the last event.
Lastly, having had
only one lady at each of the first two events it was great to have four
today so well done to Lorraine, Trudy, Beckie and Ruth.

National
Duathlon Champs (Ashbourne)
Andy
Collins was our sole competitor at this National event, unable to get away
Friday night, it meant another early start, leaving home at 4:30am. The
race comprises a tough 12Km run, hilly 40km bike, then a fast flat 4km run.
A little disappointed with his 3rd placing at Cambridge
, Andy was keen to
turn the tables on the two that beat him there. I am pleased
to be able to report he did that and, surpassing his own expectations he
won the silver medal, coming second in his age group.

Sunday 1st April was
the first of the London League fixtures, proceedings took place at Stubbers
Activity centre near Upminster and the event, The Dragonslayer was hosted
by East London Triathletes.
Members present on the
day were; Kathleen S, Andy C, Jim B, Anthony H, Francis S, Phil S and Rob
C.
The first 3 mile run
was all off road and pretty flat with the exception of a few short hills
and a stiff breeze added in for good measure. A nice flat non technical
bike route and again the breeze was present, four laps and around 23 miles
according to Francis. To finish it off we had to put the running shoes back
on and head out for the last 5 mile off road run.
We were first team
with Full on Tri in 2nd and Optima in 3rd. I think we caused a bit of a
stir among the other teams who I'm guessing have never heard of us.
Our scorers Jim
Burdett 2nd Overall Andy Collins 4th overall, 1st Vet Phil Scarles 16th?

Ruth Hutton had an
excellent race at the UK Half Ironman in Longleat finishing 7th Lady
overall in a time of 5 hours 16 minutes against a very strong international
field. Ruth justified her decision to race with the Pro women for the first
time as she was faster than all the age groupers and collected a nice
cheque for her efforts.
The overall winners of
the race were Paul Matthews in 4:15 and Nina Eggert in 4:57
